Don't underestimate this little 7.2 square mile island chain in the Florida Keys.

Perhaps the world's highest density of professional offshore charter boats with tournament-grade captains can be found in Islamorada, a village of six small islands where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly fishing were pioneered. In fact, Islamorada may be the only place on Earth where it is possible to catch a sailfish offshore and pursue bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and redfish in just inches of water in the backcountry, all in the same day. [1]

Islamorada is where great sports fishermen go when they want the best there is. Former President George H. W. Bush made headlines in 2008 when he snagged a 135-pound tarpon while fishing with guide George Wood. Other famous anglers who have fished these waters include former Presidents Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, and Jimmy Carter; British Prime Minister Winston Churchill; actors Gene Hackman, Paul Newman; and former Boston Red Sox left fielder Ted Williams. [2]

Islamorada's proximity to the Florida Bay, Atlantic Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico attracts a great variety of fish species. The Gulf Stream, which passes closely to the island, is where the big game fish live. Inside the reef line you will find the feisty sailfish and king fish. Florida Bay is also very popular for catches like trout and redfish.

Our Dream Sporting Trips writer caught up with Captain Tony Horsley of Bowed Up Fishing Charters in Islamorada, and he had this to tell us about the spectacular fishing available there:

"This is a very exciting time of year here in the Florida Keys. The tarpon are starting to come in and as the weather warms up they will become "happy" and start biting. Catching a 100 lb tarpon is the thrill of a lifetime. During the months of March-June people flock to The Keys just for their chance to catch a big tarpon.

"Living in the Florida Keys lends itself to a very laid back lifestyle. You feel like you are in the Caribbean while still living in the United States. We spend a lot of time on the water. Our lives revolve around fishing, boating and other outdoor activities where we can enjoy our beautiful surroundings. Living in a tourist destination is a lot of fun. The scenery is always changing and we meet lots of great people from all over the world."

Bowed Up Fishing Charters offers full and half day charters. Fishing licenses, bait and tackle is all included, you just need to come ready to create very special memories on the water. From edibles like snapper and groupers to sport fish like tarpon, permit, snook and reds, you are guaranteed to have a great time on the water in Islamorada. [3]
