Don't underestimate this little 7.2 square mile island chain in the Florida Keys.
Perhaps the world's highest density of professional offshore charter boats with tournament-grade captains can be found in Islamorada, a village of six small islands where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly fishing were pioneered. In fact, Islamorada may be the only place on Earth where it is possible to catch a sailfish offshore and pursue bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and redfish in just inches of water in the backcountry, all in the same day. [1]
Islamorada is where great sports fishermen go when they want the best there is. Former President George H. W. Bush made headlines in 2008 when he snagged a 135-pound tarpon while fishing with guide George Wood. Other famous anglers who have fished these waters include former Presidents Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, and Jimmy Carter; British Prime Minister Winston Churchill; actors Gene Hackman, Paul Newman; and former Boston Red Sox left fielder Ted Williams. [2]
Islamorada's proximity to the Florida Bay, Atlantic Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico attracts a great variety of fish species. The Gulf Stream, which passes closely to the island, is where the big game fish live. Inside the reef line you will find the feisty sailfish and king fish. Florida Bay is also very popular for catches like trout and redfish.
