Looking for a great fight and an even better dinner? This aggressive fish readily strikes both live and artificial baits and can be found close to shore for the majority of their lifetime, making them easy targets for anglers. They grow to well over 100 pounds, and are one of the best-fighting fish out there.

Best baits to use when fishing for cobia

Here's a hint on the best bait to use: crabs compose 70% of the cobia's diet.

Live bait:

  • Crabs (live crabs are better, but quartered pieces will work)
  • Live pinfish
  • Cut baits: cut mullet, halves of threadfin, chunks of ladyfish

Artificial bait:

  • well-rigged plastic eels

As cobia are notorious for wrapping lines around buoys and wreck structures, you'll want to use a 30 lb. test line or heavier.

Keys are a seasonal hotspot for cobia

Along the Atlantic coast, cobia spend the winter months near the Keys, and will typically migrate northwards as spring and summer approach.

Islamorada is known around the world for their first-class fishing

It's true that the fishing is great year 'round in the beautiful waters surrounding the Sport Fishing Capital of the World--the famously laid-back, charming Islamorada, part of the chain of isles that make up the Florida Keys located off the southern tip of Florida and only 90 minutes from Miami.

Fishing limit

Federal and Florida laws state laws allow fishing for cobia year-round. You can keep 1 fish per person per day, or 6 fishes per boat, whichever is less. The minimum size limit is 33 inches, head to tail fork.

Go with a guide who knows the waters

Islamorada fishing guides spend their days out on the water and know the area like no one else. They know when the fish are running, where they're feeding, and they know the optimum place for YOU to cast your line to get the trophy fish you deserve. Add to that the fact that fishing charters typicallly supply bait and tackle, and it's an easy decision.
