elk hunting ideas

So you're going on an elk hunting trip? Congratulations! You'll no doubt find it one of the most exciting hunts you'll ever go on. Especially if this is your first elk hunting experience, you'd be wise to select an outfitter to make the most out of this opportunity.

An outfitter can provide you with everything you need for a successful elk hunt. They can provide a majority of the hunting equipment required along with an actual guide who will go out with you on your hunt.

According to outfitters, here are some of the most common mistakes made by novice elk hunters, and tips to increases your chances of success:

1) Mistake: "Elk Fever" fueled by a desire to bag the biggest elk.

Don't make the mistake of assuming you can always kill a lesser elk later in the hunt if a big one doesn’t show early on. You might find yourself passing up several fine bulls while holding out for a bigger one and losing the opportunity altoghter. Advice? Shoot the elk you’d take the last day as soon as you see it.

2) Mistake: Not being in good physical shape for the hunt.

Elk country can be steep and rocky. You'll want to walk or jog for several weeks prior to your hunt to be in the best shape possible.

3) Mistake: Shooting poorly without a bench.

It's wise to practice regularly with a paper target from sitting, kneeling, and off-hand positions.

4) Mistake: Heavy rifles that slow you down.

Heavy rifles can slow your step, tire you in the hills, and keep you from wanting to venture into the best elk cover. Unless you're strong and fit, limit your rifle weight to 9 lbs.

5) Mistake: Making too much noise while hunting.

Elk hear well. Hunters who talk loudly or let their gear clack and rattle as they walk send elk packing. If you must communicate, whisper.
